Powered mobility workshop

On Thursday 1st July we are running a powered mobility workshop at Enable Ireland’s assitive technology service in Dublin. The workshop is split into 3 sections and you are welcome to attend one or all of the sessions.

Session 1: 10am-11:15am

General introduction to alternative wheelchair control for powered mobility. Overview of the functionality of the Genie Joystick, Genie Plus, Click2Go

Session 2: 11:45am – 1pm

Integrating controllers to other technology such as mobile phones, computer access, environmental controls or communication machines

Session 3: 2pm – 3pm

Practical set up of powered mobility controllers using the DX Wizard software

Meet Mr Adriaans

Meet Mr Adriaans from Holland who played music all his life. Attended an adult rehab after he broke his neck, has a high level spinal chord injury, is blind and can not move his hands at all. MyBreathMyMusic worked for 2 months with Mr Adriaans in the first serious attempt to use the Magic Flute with an adult. The results are amazing. In the video below Mr Adriaans performs a farewell concert at the Rehab before he moves to a nursing home for the rest of his life.

My Breath My Music – a ‘Not For Profit’ Charitable Foundation

the My Breath My Music Foundation aims to give people with severe physical disabilities the opportunity to play music, using either self-adapted electronic instruments or by playing our latest invention – the amazing Magic Flute. The Magic Flute can simulate any instrument in the orchestra.

Child support
Children from our target group can get an electronic instrument on loan. Our policy is to leave no one behind. They only pay a small deposit. But at present we can only focus on the Netherlands. We have a small amount of instruments in stock. At this moment we have a waiting list. In the near future, as our Foundation grows, we aim to help children all over the world.

Development
We develop and customize electronic musical instruments. We’ve invented many solutions, and adapted electronic musical instruments so that they can be played by our target group. With the help of our worldwide network, we, if necessary, create new instruments, such as the Magic Flute. We also develop teaching methods specifically aimed at the target group. We’ve developed easy to read sheet music. This sheet music is also playable for children with a low cognition. We write the (sheet) music playable for our target group. For very young children and those with low cognition, we develop a method of improvisation.

Advising.
People with disabilities can receive advice on any electronic instrument they could play . Our knowledge and our network can point people in the right direction. People can get this advice from our website (email advice)and, in some cases, by visiting us.

Inspiring
People with disabilities anywhere in the world can participate locally. This is done via our Internet site www.mybreathmymusic.com. This site is intended primarily as a free online web directory. It shows what you need to get started. There are many tips and user experiences. There is also a large collection of sheet music and play-along music available. In support there are also instructional videos. To show who we are, we give workshops and demonstrations. This has inspired many to join us. Our students are given the musical skills that they can then show to a broad audience. Moreover, they become an example to society. Music, and the ability to actually play it is within us all and our participants let you hear and see that.

Music is important to many people. Playing a musical instrument is a lot of fun and playing together with others opens doors. But what if you, because of a disability, can’t play an instrument? Are you condemned to only listen to someone else playing an instrument? No.

Fortunately, there is our non profit organisation ‘My Breath My Music ” The Foundation has committed itself to make playing a musical instrument possible for people with severe physical disabilities. Besides the joy of playing an instrument it can also be an excellent way to do breathing exercises. It is a very good way to do respiratory therapy, especially for people with Muscular Dystrophy.

Most of our participants in Holland have Muscular Dystrophy. It is a very debilitating disease, affecting not just the muscles but the lungs too, requiring regular therapy in the form of breathing exercises. Ordinarily, these exercises can be very tedious and boring. But by using the Magic Flute, for instance, the children forget they are doing exercises because they are having so much fun playing music. We are also helping Spinal Injury patients who have similar muscle and lung issues. It really is a wonderful medical tool as well as a fabulous musical instrument.

One switch controls it all!

Hubert Mc Cormick demonstrated his environmental control equipment in his Dublin apartment. This equipment allows Hubert to live independently in his own home. In the video Hubert demonstrated control over doors, windows, curtain openers, television, lights, home heating, telephone and other appliances. The work was carried out by P.J. The ClickToGo Master Remote provides Effective Powered Wheelchair Control using switches. It gives independent control of mobility to individuals who do not have the requisite strength, control or co-ordination to use a standard joystick control. The ClickToGo is operated by single or multiple switches via a scanning interface. The eight direction indicators are illuminated by ultra-bright LEDs and can be scanned in many different ways. When a direction is chosen, pressing a switch drives the chair.

The ClickToGo caters for a wide variety of user needs and abilities by providing flexible and versatile programming options. These options can be selected from the front panel of the ClickToGo without the need of an external programming device.

Three different methods of scanning are supported. Single switch automatic scan, single switch short click scan and two-switch step scan. The scanning pattern can be chosen from a set of pre-programmed patterns or you can create your own.

The ClickToGo provides total control over a powered wheelchair system. The switches used to operate the ClickToGo can also be used to make seat tilt and space adjustment, and, control an external device such as a communication aid or environmental control. This means that the same switch can be used to control different equipment.

Heading Lock

The Heading Lock device is a significant technological advancement which improves the driving performance of the ClickToGo wheelchair control. It minimises veering to the left or right on rough or cambered surfaces and dramatically improves performance when driving in a straight line.

The Heading Lock is similar to a compass. Before you start driving forward it “remembers” which direction you were heading and then as you drive forward attempts to keep you, or lock you, on that heading as the chair veers to the left or right.

The Heading Lock is simple and easy to use. It plugs into the ClickToGo and the left/right corrections that the Heading Lock makes can be seen on the ClickToGo when the Left and Right LEDs flicker.

Point-It!

Point-It! is an attractive rugged USB joystick for use as an alternative to a mouse input. It gives smooth accurate proportional control of a Windows mouse pointer. This small unobtrusive unit can be located close to a user or operated on a desktop. In addition it has fixings in its base so that it can be attached to a Super Mount and positioned effectively for chin control.

Four buttons are used to operate mouse button functions left click, double click, right click and mouse speed. 3.5mm jack sockets allow connection of standard switches for those who find it difficult to operate the switches on the unit itself. Drag-Lock feature allows a user to drag without having to keep the left button pressed.

The joystick is a professional non-contacting type as found on powered wheelchairs and is available in standard and ball knob versions. The standard version has a switch on top of the knob that operates the left mouse button. The ball knob can be interchanged with knobs including chin, sponge, wrist plate etc.

Mini Point-It!

The Mini Point-It! is a compact version of the popular Point-It! joystick and is designed to be attached to a Super Mount or similar so that it can be located close to a user. The Mini Point-It! includes features which enable the advanced user to access all mouse button functions from the switch on top of the joystick knob or by simply “flicking” the joystick – no external switch is required!

Alternatively two external switches can be connected and used to operate the mouse button functions. The left hand switch input operates the left click whilst the right hand switch input can be set to operate either the right click, left double click or mouse speed.

To use the Mini Point-It! effectively it must be mounted. A circular mounting plate with a ¼” thread is available which attaches to the bottom of the joystick and screws into any camera mounting bracket.

Knob Options

A range of knob alternatives are available for the Point-It! joysticks including T-Bar, Sponge Ball, Chin Cup, Dynamic Knob and Carrot Knob. The alternative knobs are only interchangeable with the Ball Knob versions of the Point-It!

Wireless Mouse Mover

The Wireless Computer Interface is a derivative of the Wireless Point-It! Functionally it is the same device but instead of a joystick you can connect any multiple switch, such as a TASH star, wafer or penta switch. Four of the five switches are used to make non-proportional mouse movements whilst the fifth switch is used to operate the left button. In advanced mode all mouse button functions can be accessed from the fifth switch.
